Kevin Hart, Taraji P. Henson, Sheila E., The List Goes On…
Celebrities are following the trend of adding, “author” to their resume and list of accomplishments without reading the fine print and without the full knowledge of exactly what they are giving up by signing book deals with publishing houses.
Oh dear celebrity, little do you know that they, the so-called, big deal, top six publishing houses in the land have smooth-talked their way into your pocket and are no better than the average, desperate car salesman.
Why on earth would I say such a thing, you ask? Who wouldn’t kill for a multi-million dollar book deal with a signing bonus and their name attached to a book that sells millions of copies? YOU, the big name celebrity, that’s who!
Celebrities…you don’t need these publishing houses to sell your books! You already have a platform, so you don’t need the publicity that the average nondescript author, without much of a following would need. You’ve already worked to build your platform! You already have a built-in audience eating out of the palm of your hand, waiting on you to tell them what to do next.
Here’s a prime example: Kevin Hart, you have 24 million followers on Facebook, 47.7 million followers on Instagram and 32 million followers on Twitter. Why on earth would you need the backing of a publishing house? Your fans are just salivating to read your story and have you share your “formula” or anything else you’d like to share with them. Don’t you realize you could have invested a drop in the bucket on a ghostwriter/book project manager to help you write and self-publish your book and kept ALL THE PROFITS IN YOUR OWN BANK ACCOUNT? Yes, you could have kept all your coins in your bank account instead of having your money filtered down to you after all the book publisher’s “people” got their share. Heck, you do your own marketing anyway, what are they doing to help you other than paying your writer? Man, you could have done it your damn self!
I just get so sick thinking of all the money these celebrities with built-in platforms are leaving on the table just because they don’t know any better.
I use Kevin Hart as an example because he just started “advertising” his book and instructing his audience to go and pre-order the book. Such a waste…all that money down the drain.
You should have called me, bruh! But, I guess you have so much money, what’s a few million left on the table, anyway, right? Once you start making the kind of money you make, a few million is nothing, I guess.
It burns my entire butt crack after learning the ins and outs of publishing and how easy it is to bring your book to the market, and how super easy it is once you have an established platform…
Maybe, one day, one of these celebrities will learn and they will give me a call so I can set them straight…
